If you are planning a second-storey extension, major renovation or new home, choosing the right staircase is an important part of the design.

Your staircase can affect the layout, natural light, interior style, available space and overall feel of the home. The right option will also depend on your budget, how visible you want the staircase to be and how much maintenance you are comfortable with.

In this guide, we compare different options for staircase design in Melbourne—including MDF, timber, floating and steel staircases, along with balustrade choices, cost levels and key practical considerations.

MDF Staircases

Budget to Mid-Range

An MDF staircase can be a practical and cost-effective option when the stairs will be covered with carpet or another suitable flooring finish. Because the MDF itself is usually not intended to be the main visual feature, you can keep the staircase relatively simple and put more of your budget towards the finishes you will see, such as flooring, balustrades, handrails and lighting.

Best for: Family homes, townhouses, investment properties and renovations where practicality and budget are priorities.

Timber & Hardwood Staircases

Mid-Range to Premium

Timber staircases create a warm, natural look and work well in both modern and traditional homes. You can use timber for the whole staircase or only for visible areas such as the treads and handrails. It can also be combined with glass or metal balustrades. Timber is a good option if your home already has timber flooring, cabinetry or other natural finishes.

Best for: Family homes, custom homes and major renovations where the staircase is an important part of the interior.

Floating Staircases

Cost Level: Premium to Architectural

A floating staircase is designed with the supporting structure hidden or kept to a minimum, making the individual steps appear as though they are floating. This creates a clean, modern look and can make the space around the staircase feel lighter and more open.

Floating staircases work particularly well in entrances and open-plan living areas where natural light and open sightlines are important. They can also be combined with glass balustrades and integrated LED lighting to create a more architectural feature.

Floating staircases usually cost more than standard staircases and require careful structural planning and installation. They are best considered early in the design process.

Best for: Custom homes and major renovations where you want the staircase to become a modern architectural feature.

Steel & Metal Staircases

Mid-Range to Architectural

Steel staircases create a modern, clean look and can be designed in a range of styles, from simple contemporary stairs to more custom architectural designs.

Steel is strong and durable, making it a good option if you want a staircase that requires relatively little maintenance. The steel structure can also be powder-coated in different finishes to suit the interior of your home.

Steel works particularly well with timber treads, which can add warmth to the design, and can be paired with glass or metal balustrades for a more open, contemporary look.

Best for: Modern homes and major renovations where you want a durable, contemporary staircase with an architectural feel.

Choosing the Right Staircase Balustrade

The balustrade can have a big impact on how your staircase looks and how open or enclosed the space feels.

Timber balustrades create a warm, natural look and work well in both traditional and modern homes. They are a good choice if you want to match timber flooring, cabinetry or other timber finishes.

Glass balustrades help keep the staircase feeling open and allow more light through the space. They work particularly well with timber and floating staircases, but they usually need more regular cleaning. While glass offers an open and lightweight feel, choosing protective glass treatments can help minimise fingerprints and make routine cleaning easier.

Metal balustrades create a clean, modern look and are generally easy to maintain. They work well with both timber and steel staircases.

You can also combine materials. For example, timber treads with a metal balustrade will create a more contemporary look, while timber with glass will feel lighter and more open.

Staircase Safety & NCC Requirements

Whatever staircase style you choose, it also needs to meet the applicable National Construction Code (NCC) requirements.

For a typical residential staircase, some of the key requirements that may need to be considered include:

·       Risers: 115 mm minimum and 190 mm maximum

·       Goings: 240 mm minimum and 355 mm maximum

·       Stair proportion: 2R + G generally between 550 mm and 700 mm

·       Flights: generally between 2 and 18 risers

·       Open risers: openings generally must not allow a 125 mm sphere to pass through

·       Barriers: where required along stairs, at least 865 mm above the stair nosings

·       Handrails: generally required along at least one side of the stair flight

·       Headroom: generally at least 2.0 m above the stair nosing line

There are also requirements covering step consistency, landings, barriers, winders and structural loading.

These measurements are a general guide only. The exact requirements should be checked for each project before the staircase is designed, fabricated or installed, as the building type, staircase design and project conditions can affect what is required. This is especially important for floating stairs, open risers, glass balustrades and custom steel staircases.

Which Staircase Design Is Right for Your Melbourne Home?

To narrow down your options, start with how visible the staircase will be in your layout. If it sits tucked away from your main living areas, a simple and functional design allows you to allocate more of your budget elsewhere. However, if it sits near the entrance or forms part of an open-plan space, investing in timber, steel, glass, or a floating design can dramatically elevate the entire interior.

Beyond aesthetics, consider practical details like maintenance, overall budget, and how the materials complement the rest of your home. It is also essential to finalize your staircase design early in the process—its structural placement, finished floor levels, and lighting requirements directly impact the surrounding layout.

At DEMK Constructions, we integrate these choices into the wider design and build process, ensuring your staircase is structurally sound, compliant, and perfectly suited to your lifestyle. Request a Consultation
